An epic Saga about a gifted but unhappy assistant curator of the new prosperity museum

Edward Averett’s new Prosperity Museum follows the life of Henry James George, the boy with the three first names. Set largely in Washington State, in small towns like Rochester and Aberdeen, this Novel offers a glimpse of post-World Debate II America, showing the idealism and pain of a country that is action but is optimistic about the future.

It is clear that Henry is exceptionally bright when he starts reading at the age of three. But at the age of seven, he also suffers several major personal tragedies: the passed away of a sister, the imminent passed away of his other sister and the secret disappearance of his best friend Wayman. Henry is called a executer by the city, especially by his friend’s grieving mother, but he knows that Wayman’s disappearance was mystical. And maybe it has something to do with Henry saving his sister’s life by reading to her…

Henry finally realizes that he is a Curandero, a Chehalis healer with gifts of spiritual healing, although he is not indigenous. This is the starting point for a long conversation about stolen lands and stolen power. Henry learns that his gift, although it can make him famous, also has the power to hurt him and is sent away by his parents to live at the New Prosperity Museum under the pretext of helping the elder curator. He will live there from time to time for the rest of his life.

The new Prosperity museum is both deeply rooted in American history and centered on the fictional life of Henry and his relatives. He tries, with success, to take the pulse of time by describing parts of the Vietnam War, the beginning of the AIDS crisis and more from the point of view of small towns. The museum itself is at the center of the text as a monument of hope and memory, with a welcome sign that says “Come and see your future in the past” – a sign worn down by the elements over the years.

Due to the enormous scope of the novel, it can sometimes be difficult to keep up with the new prosperity museum. He does not shy away from moments of intense roughness, and he follows at lightning speed, adapting an impressive amount of Henry’s life to 357 pages. He urges readers to slow down and face painful truths, even if it is difficult or uncomfortable.

At its core, the new Prosperity museum embodies an era of American history, taking a thoughtful look at the most optimistic aspects of our past while refusing to erase the ugliness that accompanied it. Both a celebration and a lament, this book offers an enlightened perspective on our past and our future and takes readers into moments of magical realism. The result is a real and fascinating read.
